Will Our Children Live a Life of Compliance or one of Personal Agency?

STUDENTS ARE MISSING OUT ON CRITICAL LIFE AND CAREER SKILLS

To be ready for life, career, and college, students need more than academic knowledge. They need the dispositions, character, and skills for taking ownership of their learning and work.

IT TAKES SYSTEMIC CHANGE

Systems Theory tells us that when you optimize a single subsystem, the performance of the system as a whole is degraded.  If we optimize school systems for the single outcome of high test scores, we are degrading the capacity of the system overall. To optimize the whole system, we need a balancing metric, one that drives the system towards balance and stability and optimal performance.

Student Agency is such a balancing outcome.

A balanced school system not only leads to deeper learning and essential skills, it supports the human and humane practices for developing a child’s potential that lie at the heart of teaching.
